What is market share? A compass showing where the money in the crypto market is heading. When the share rises, funds are flowing into Bitcoin, and altcoins have tended to lose relative strength by the same measure.
I've heard it called 'dominance' — what's that?
It's another name for this indicator. 'Dominance' means Bitcoin's portion of the total market capitalization (coin price multiplied by circulating supply). For example, 60% means 60% of the money in the crypto market sits in Bitcoin.
Why do altcoins weaken when the share rises?
The money entering the market is limited, so when it concentrates in Bitcoin, the portion left for altcoins shrinks. That is why altcoins have tended to rise less or fall more than Bitcoin while its share climbs.
How do I use it?
It's a reference for deciding whether to focus on Bitcoin or to look at altcoins too. When the share turns down from a peak, it is often read as money spreading into altcoins — sometimes called an 'alt season'.
